Outcome of Genuinely Professional Assessment and Training

As a result of Group B Streptococcus infection at birth, our son, Long Long suffered from meningitis and had to be hospitalised for almost a month. Despite his recovery, the illness affected his normal growth. When he was around three, we found that his speech development was slower than that of his age group. After detailed analysis by a psychiatrist, we learnt that Long Long had a tendency of Hyperactivity Disorder and he also needed speech therapy training

When Long Long reached about six years old, a friend introduced to us Dr. Jane Nam, Educational Psychologist of the Positive Life Association Ltd. and recommended her training course for Long Long. Every time we met Dr. Nam, we were impressed because we invariably felt that she was full of vitality and positive energy.

In class, Dr. Nam always carefully studied Long Long’s learning ability and behaviour, whereby she knew that Long Long in fact has strong visual-spatial ability.

According the Dr. Nam’s research findings, children with relatively strong visual-spatial ability are usually rated by ‘certain professionals’ as ‘having a tendency of Hyperactivity Disorder’.

Other than that, Long Long’s thinking is inclined towards what are known as ‘Micro Thinking’ and ‘Symmetrical Thinking’, which is why he is relatively slow in expression and response in the course of learning. According to Dr. Nam’s research findings, children with ‘Micro Thinking’ and ‘Symmetrical Thinking’ tendencies are usually rated by ‘certain professionals’ as ‘having Developmental Delay’.

Having been told about Long Long’s strength in his learning ability, we trained him according to that strength. Although he has now completed his training course, we still continue to follow the guideline of Dr. Nam to train our son. Gradually, he has made marked improvement in his concentration. For example, much to our amazement, he could spend one and a half hours focusing on building a model.

An unforgettable experience for us, while it was Long Long who was receiving training, Dr. Nam had at the same time given us the right enlightenment, letting us know how to aptly cope with what negative assessment other people might make of our son and enabling us to rebound from our abyss of worries.

Dr. Nam positively discovers and develops ‘strengths and potentials’ of children, and that indeed is the proper path to ameliorate their so-called ‘learning disabilities’, letting them suitably develop and grow in their sphere of learning according to their respective ‘strengths and potentials’.
